We'd expect that the News section of a Roanoke music website would be fairly self-explanatory, but in case it isn't, we'll try to explain this in detail.
If it matters to you, then it matters to us.  If it happens in town and means anything to the musicians or music fans of our city, then we're going to talk about it, give you the details, and attempt to be entertaining at the same time.  That is all.
>> There's a fine line between gossip and news, but fortunately for you, we can't draw.
While we strive to keep our finger on the pulse of Roanoke music news, that doesn't mean we don't like tips.  If you've got some newsworthy info, send it our way at news@rocknroanoke.com.  We'll dig having the scoop, and you'll have the satisfaction of thinking you're more informed than everyone else.  Ego boosts rock.

+ Judge Says Bands Liable for Noise Violations
>> Posted Thursday, May 24 / 2007 / 9:00am

For those of you who like to keep it on 11, take notice - Franklin County officials say they are changing the way they prosecute violations of the noise ordinance - they are going after the bands, not the bars.
This decision comes after a General District judge dismissed noise ordinance violation charges against Mangos' co-owner Tim Reith that were filed last July when residents near the lakeside bar complained of excessive nighttime noise.  Reith was found not guilty as the judge concluded that it is the band and/or their soundman who should be charged for exceeding the noise limit.
"Who is making the noise is the one you're supposed to go after," said Judge George Jones. "I assume it's the band making the noise where they are. Why not go after them?"
"The judge's preference is that we charge the band or the person causing the amplified noise to exceed the limit, as opposed to the owner in charge of the establishment," said Franklin County Administrator Rick Huff. "We'll follow his direction."
Several of the bands involved, as well as many lake businesses are already expressing concern that this decision will impact the SML nightlife by deterring bands from performing in the area for fear of prosecution.
Quotes from this update were found at Roanoke.com where the Roanoke Times has a full article on the recent decision. Make sure to check out their site and read the whole story here.

 + Roanoke's Rockin' Rememberance
>> Posted Monday, April 23rd / 2007 / 10:00am

While we'd like to think that we are rarely at a loss for words, the tragedy at Virginia Tech has left us speechless.  When you consider the strong sprit of our friends in Blacksburg, there is a sense that all this is somehow unreal - it seems as though it happens in "other" places, not in our own backyard.  And yet it is real.  It is real to those who lost their children, and to those who have lost their friends.  And it is real for the rest of us, who could simply watch and try to comprehend.
To the families and friends of those we lost, you have our thoughts and most sincere prayers.  And to those who have found their own grief and shock as they watch these circumstances unfold, our hearts go out to you as well.
Much has been said about the strength of our community this past week, and this is another example:  Awful Arthur's and EventZone have organized a special tribute concert at Elmwood park in Downtown Roanoke this Thursday, April 26th.
First, there's lunch and music in the park from noon until 2pm, with no admission.  Then, a fantastic lineup of local artists performing a tribute concert from 4-11pm, all for only $5, with all proceeds to benefit the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.
The full musical lineup includes: The Kind, Groova Scape, Electric Chameleon, Jerry Wimmer, Half Moon, Chinese Fire Drill, Shayar & Krooshal Force, The Pop Rivets, Hot Like Cajun, Illbotz, Built To Write, Mid Atlantic Kingz, Crobar Cane, Drivn, & TK-421.

 + An Illbotic TimesCast
>> Posted Saturday, April 14th / 2007 / 1:00pm

If you're a faithful fan of RockNRoanoke.com, then you already know about the hilarious Ask An Illbot column that we've been featuring in our Headquarters section.  But for those who might not be so hip to the jive, the Illbotz cut a promo for their digital wisdom by appearing on the most recent edition of the Roanoke Times' famous TimesCast, which you can view here.  The 'botz style and profile as only they can, giving viewers a small taste of the brilliance their column contains.
Not only that, but you'll also get an update regarding downtown's newest venue, 202 Market, from James Pace and the Times' immortal man-on-the-street, Tad Dickens.  202 Market is now open, and set to feature a number of great acts.  As a side note, while it isn't technically "local," I have to mention that they're bringing in Average White Band for a show on the 25th of this month!  Some of us wait an entire career to cut a promo for AWB, so there it is - I can die a happy man.  Seriously, a great venue, in a hot location, with a music-loving staff guiding the reigns - make sure to check 202 Market out.

+ Re-zoning Approved for Sweetwater Amphitheater
>> Posted Tuesday, April 10th / 2007 / 11:00am

For supporters following the saga of the proposed Sweetwater Amphitheater, we've some great news!  As of last night, the Bedford County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the new zoning changes necessary for the project, authorizing a portion of the property's 56 acres to be rezoned under the appropriate C-2 classification.  Prior to this change, only 16 acres were classified as such, with the remaining 40 zoned as R-1.  Needing this approval in order to begin construction, the support of the community and the board takes this project one step closer to completion.
The proposed venue has generated quite a bit of excitement since plans were originally announced, and this latest development is encouraging for those who are eager to see Sweetwater take shape.  Promising to bring national musical acts to the Eastlake area, there are also plans to support hosting of theatrical performances and festivals within the venue's impressive capacity of 7,000 (2500 under-roof, 4500 lawn).  For more info on the Sweetwater Amphitheater, visit their website at www.sweetwateramphitheater.com

 + News Updates From Everywhere
>> Posted Tuesday, April 3rd / 2007 / 7:00pm

News, news, and still more news.  New releases, new names, new faces.  March was a packed full of announcements, so for your convenience, we've decided to include a quick summary of some recent developments you might've missed.

 - WROV has announced their Battle of the Bands winner(s): 1.) Electric Chameleon 2.) Twist Off 3.) Sick N Tired.  See below story (WROV 96.3 Battle of the Bands Update) for complete details on prizes.  Congratulations to the winners!
 - Local punk mainstays Fire At Will recently announced that they are breaking up.  The band played a series of shows late in March that they have insisted are their last, and made post on their website insisting that, despite a number of rumors, the breakup is legit and not an April Fool's joke.  You can see the full statement on their MySpace page.  We'll certainly miss the band, and wish each of them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
 - It's the moment Madrone fans have been waiting for - the band's full-length debut album, Cause and Compromise is completed and will be hitting the streets on April 21st.  The band is hosting a special cd release show that night at the Mill Mountain Theatre, and will be giving away a free copy of the album to each of the first 100 people through the door.  They've also launched their new site, madroneonline.com which features a teaser for the upcoming album.
 - The infamous Illbotz have told fans that their upcoming show (April 7th, 9pm) at Awful Athur's Towers will be their last performance as a hip-hop act.  Instead, they have announced an intent to "go acoustic," with Perm playing guitar and Stevie singing.
 - Great news for Savior Bullets fans - the band has announced plans to enter the studio this June.  According to the statement, their goal is to lay down tracks for an upcoming EP release.
 - Metal band Speak of the Devil promised a name change earlier this month, after discovering that the SOTD name has already been taken.  Following weeks of speculation, they've rechristened themselves as Beneath the Roses.

And if you think THIS is a lot, wait until you see what's in store for April!  There are a number of big shows in the works, lineup changes pending, and other matters of hot gossip to discuss.  Not to mention what we're actually cooking up for you...

The Jefferson Center issued a press release today announcing their newest music series for 2007 - Roanoke Live!.  According to the release, the Center plans the event as Roanoke's ultimate "listening room," giving local artists the opportunity to take the stage, performing at a venue that boasts up to 400 seats.  Not only that, but each artist selected to perform will receive three hours of recording time at Flat Five Recording Studio, and could also be asked to open for national/international artists scheduled to appear at the Jefferson Center in the future.
The calendar is already set for the first 3 months, but the release also mentions that the Center is now accepting submissions from regional bands who wish to be featured in future installments of the series.  If you're interested, they request you send a CD to: Roanoke Live! at Jefferson Center, 541 Luck Ave., SW, Suite 221, Roanoke, VA 24020. Make sure to include a band bio/profile, press photo, and contact information.

+ Roanoke Times Music Poll 2006

It's that time again!  The Roanoke Times has posted their annual music poll, asking all of Roanoke to share their thoughts on the artists and music that had the biggest impact on them in 2006.  Of course, this poll focuses primarily on the national scene, but WAIT!  On page 2...certain to spawn a hundred MySpace bulletins - the local categories!
Page 2 of this good ole' poll lets you vote on the Best Band, Best Local Album, Best Female Singer, Best Male Singer, Best Concert/Festival, Best Place to Hear Live Music, and Best Local Radio Station.  These folks work hard to entertain you, so show them some love and cast your vote for your favorites by clicking here.
We've also created a special thread for the Music Poll in our Arena chat forum, so bands can properly introduce themselves (as well as their singers and albums), and fans can debate, discuss, and disagree on choices.  Head over there and check it out!

 + A Few Bass Notes
>> Revised Wednesday, November 29th / 2006 / 8:37am

The last few weeks have seen a number of dramatic shifts in band lineups where bassists are concerned, so for those of you keeping score at home, here's the complete list [edited, with help from the Band Girl] :
     · Thash/metal band Aggressor State have announced the departure of their bassist Ben Hudson.  In a statement from the band released at the end of October, Hudson left to pursue his interest in other musical projects.  The band announced their new bassist as Darren Shropshire.
     · October also saw the departure of Keith "Jesus" McInstosh from metal band Speak of the Devil, who issued a statement to fans explaining his exit as a matter of simple priorities and responsibilities that kept him from devoting as much time as was needed to keep the band moving forward.  The band has a temporary fill-in, but are continuing to hold auditions for a replacement.
     · It's been officially announced that Matt Owens will be leaving Burning Bridges, though no definitive date for an exit has been mentioned.
     · Tim Wilson has left Bad Dog to rejoin Shakedown.  Replacing Tim in Bad Dog will be Matt Owens.
     · Filling Matt's vacancy in Burning Bridges will be a familiar face - bassist Dave Porter, who's leaving his current spot in the Worx to rejoin his old band (fans will remember Dave as the original bassist for Bridges).  No word yet on when Dave will step in...
     · Rejoining the Worx to take Dave's place will be none other than their previous bassist, Justin Tolley, who left the Worx earlier this year to fill-in with Drivn.  Justin announced his first weekend back with the band will be Dec. 1 & 2.
     · Made official this morning, Josh Bittinger has announced his departure from Cobalt Media.  Josh's announcement also mentioned that he has plans to be part of a new music project, so we'll keep you updated on that.
If we missed anything, let us know.  We wish everyone the best of luck.

+ Breaking Benjamin, but no TK-421 - Update
>> Updated Monday, December 4th / 2006 / 9:00am

After Hollywood Records recording artists Breaking Benjamin postponed their November show at Cattle Annie's when their singer fell ill, they promised that it was merely a postponement - NOT a cancellation, meaning fans of the band could expect it to a later date.

The show has since been rescheduled for February 6th, however, will not feature local rockers TK-421 as was originally planned.  Though the band was told they would be the opening act once a new date was determined, this has since turned out to not be the case.

+ New Speak of the Devil Video
>> Posted Friday, October 13th / 2006 / 8:30am

Speak of the Devil have released a new video for "The Dead Lie Unburied," shot live at their recent 2 Wheel performance, and posted on their official MySpace page.  Though the band recognizes that it isn't the highest quality film/recording, they insist it's just a sample of their live act and promise to deliver something shinier in the near future. Their comments -
"Check it out, "The Dead Lie Unburied" live at the 2 Wheel Cafe. It sounds like shit and was shot in night vision, but it gets to the point of an SOTD show. We'll put one up of better quality soon...~SOTD"
You can view the video on their page HERE.  If/when the band does post a better quality clip, we'll make sure to let you know.

+ Artist of the Month (October) - The Pop Rivets!
>> Posted Tuesday, October 3rd / 2006 / 11:00am

Your votes have put The Pop Rivets in as RockNRoanoke.com's Artist of the Month for October.  We'll be flying the flag of the Pop Rivet Nation for the next 4 weeks or so, not only giving you the usual behind-the-music introspectives, but even targeting the Rivets with some of our planned "mysterious upgrades" to take the whole Artist section in the direction we've really wanted to take it.  After all, if they're going to get this dressed up [see left], then don't you think they deserve something?  Well, we do, and we're making room for it.  This is good news for Rivets fans (and fans of our previous artists as well) as we'll be giving you more of your favorite artist(s) than ever before.

Once again, we thank everyone who wrote in their votes throughout the month, and for those of you who helped cast the final ballots.  We enjoy the ease and comfort that voting in the Arena has given us, so we're probably going to use that approach going forward.  You can register quickly (blah, blah...I keep reminding you) and keep track of the voting as it happens, and we let your votes do the talking.  That doesn't make us lazy, does it?  We didn't think so either...

 + Jimmie's Chicken Shack & Cobalt Media!
>> Posted Wednesday, September 27th / 2006 / 4:00pm

After several months of negotiations, the deal was sealed just a few hours ago for 90's alt rock stars Jimmie's Chicken Shack to perform at Awful Arthur's (Towers location) on October 6th.  In addition to bringing their unique sounds to the Roanoke audience, the band's show will be opened by local rockers Cobalt Media.  The Shack's live show has long been regarded as an unpredictable experience, so calling it a "night to remember" is really just pointing out the obvious.

If, for whatever reason, you aren't aware, the band's reputation is built squarely on a brand of in-your-face originality that's resulted in a catalog of unclassifiable albums and songs that never seem to sound the same way twice.  In the whole "you need a look and a sound" market, they've become icons to millions of artists who refuse to be defined or pigeonholed.  On top of that, we tip our hat to Cobalt for scoring the sweet gig.  The more local musicians get the chance to share the stage with top talent, the more we like it.  It gives our artists the chance to shine, our scene the exposure and credibility it deserves, and it gives us something to write about.  Everybody wins.

+ Local Music Night on the Not Important Radio Show
>> Posted Tuesday, September 12th / 2006 / 9:00am

Just an announcement about this Wednesday's (9/13)  special edition of WRKE's Not Important Radio Show.  It's "All Local Music" night, meaning you'll be able to hear tracks from many of your favorite hometown acts.  Additionally, as part of the event, the show will feature a roundtable discussion on Roanoke's music scene that will feature not only members of some of the area's most popular bands, but the Phantom himself!  Our ghostly founder has been invited to participate and will be making a rare appearance to toss in his two cents on stuff that matters to every musician and local music fan in the valley.  Tune in to the show on WRKE 100.3 FM from 10pm-Midnight if you live in or around Salem, VA.  But if you don't live close to Salem and wish to listen, or for some reason cannot pick it up on a normal radio, the station is broadcast on the web, 24/7, at www.wrke.org.

+ Artist of the Month (September) - Madrone Wins!
>> Posted Tuesday, September 5th / 2006 / 1:00pm

The votes are in, and the fans have spoken.  We're proud to announce that Madrone is RocknRoanoke.com's Artist of the Month for September.  Using the new Arena forum (free promotion where we can get it, folks), we listed the top 3 candidates from the write-in votes we'd received all month, and then we invited our users to vote online - and vote they did.  In a pretty close race, Madrone's fans helped them secure the top spot, meaning you'll be seeing plenty of the band for the next 4 weeks.  Join us in congratulating the band, and stay tuned to the site throughout the month for as much Madrone as one person can probably take.

A special thanks goes out to each and every one of you who voted.  We'd be kidding ourselves if we didn't acknowledge that some of you who signed up did so simply to vote for your favorite band, but we're alright with that.  But like everything else on this site, the forums, the news, the links, and the media are all there for you - the fans and musicians.  This month, you wanted Madrone.  So we're giving you Madrone.  But keep telling us what you want, and we'll keep giving it to you.  All month.  Every month.  From now, until I start hating computers...

+ The Discordian Society Heads Back Into the Studio
>> Posted Wednesday, August 30th / 2006 / 11:30am

One of Roanoke's favorite chaotic jam bands have gone back to the studio, putting in the time to create the followup release to their debut album, Rise of the Molecule.  According to the band's website, the next disc is entitled Quality Control, and is planned to have 12-13 tracks, totaling about 74 minutes (max cd recording length, kids).  This is great news for fans of the band, and anyone else who appreciates musical precision.

While we don't yet have a timeline on Quality Control's release, the band expects to have a few tracks ready for release by the end of the Fall, with the full disc ready for delivery this winter.  We'll keep you up to date as news on the album progresses, and if we ask nice enough, TDS might even give us some behind-the-scenes access as the record gets made.

+ Illbotz Found Working Among Us!
>> Posted Wednesday, August 30th / 2006 / 10:00am

In a startling revelation, it's been discovered that Illbotz - the hip-hop invaders from the planet Illbatron - are not only living, but working among us!  Read the full story in the Roanoke Times or on Roanoke.com this Thursday (Aug. 31st),  but for now, here's the official word from one of the botz, Stevie D:

"How dope is this?  Very, very, very dope!  Roanoke Times has just finished an article on me and it is going to be in the Extra section this Thursday, August 31. They wanted to run a series on young people with interesting jobs in Roanoke.  I guess I fit that profile.  This article  talks about me being a Nursing Home Activity Director by day, and a hardcore gangsta-rappa-muthafucka by night.  Hopefully, it won't mention my job as an assistant crackwhore b/w 5-9pm.  We'll see. But anyway, this article features some of my residents here at my nursing home and it should be awesome!  Totally radical! So check it out.  You'll be a much better person if you do!  Word Life!"

+ Go In the Sound Room w/ Savior Bullets
>> Posted Sunday, August 27th / 2006 / 10:00pm

Announcing our first trip into the Sound Room, with this month's featured artist, Savior Bullets.  Each month, we'll ask our artist to discuss the songs, albums, or bands that most heavily influenced them, and let them explain it in their own words.  It's the perfect opportunity for them to open up about the music that rocks their world, and a chance for fans to get a better understanding about what sort of [possibly demented] things go on inside the minds of their favorite artists.  This month, Bullets' lead singer, Chris, opens up about the 10 albums that had the biggest impact on his life.  Make sure to check it out on the Artist page now - and don't forge, yout can tell us what music rocks YOUR world over in the Arena.

After 10 years as one of Roanoke's best live jazz & blues venues, The Club at Fiji Island has announced that they have ceased operation as of July 31st.  In addition to supporting the blues and live jazz performance circuits in it's early years, the Club has also provided a well-equipped open-mic night, and been a stomping ground for many local acts of various genres.  The Club's stage and atmosphere will be missed, as will their constant support of local live music.  The owners, Marian and Russ Hawkins, have posted an official statement on the Club's website - http://www.theclubatfiji.com
